Statesboro challenges should be thrown out
by Eric Marshall
After reviewing the 909 challenges against the eligibility of Georgia Southern University students, it became quickly apparent all challenges should be thrown out. All 909 challenges were identical and were based on personal information that the challengers could not have ascertained. For example, it is safe to say the challengers do not have personal knowledge that each student receives "significant mail and personal bills" at non-Statesboro addresses, that each student does not stay in Statesboro during the summer, and that each student plans to leave Statesboro upon graduating. Lawyers’ Committee Board Member and Election Protection Georgia leader, Charles Lester, sent a letter to the Bulloch County Board of Commissioners contesting that, "it is readily apparent that the Board’s probable cause determination is both procedurally and substantively deficient," and requesting that the Board of Registrars dismiss the challenges.
While the Lawyers’ Committee actions come on the eve of tomorrow’s elections, we are confident that each challenged student that votes will have his or her vote counted. Election Protection lawyers will be in Statesboro this week to guarantee fair elections. If you haven’t done so already, please sign our petition to the Senate so that another "Statesboro" doesn’t happen.
