The Senate can still stop von Spakovsky nod

by Barbara R. Arnwine

Photo from Slate.comToday I sent a second letter, this time to the entire United States Senate, urging them on behalf of the Lawyers’ Committee to oppose the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to the Federal Election Commission.

Last week, despite an unprecedented outpouring of opposition from the civil rights community, the Senate Rules Committee voted out the group of four FEC nominees without a recommendation.  While we hoped von Spakovsky’s nomination would not make it to the Senate floor, the fact that he was voted out without recommendation is a big development in itself.  This was a compromise because committee chair, Senator Diane Feinstein, opposed the nomination but faced complaints that FEC nominees are usually confirmed as a group instead of on an individual basis.

Let’s hope the Senate does the right thing and says "no" to the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to the Federal Elections Commission.
