Lawyers’ Committee Protects Vote in MD

by Jon Greenbaum

Today, a coalition of organizations filed suit in state court in Maryland requesting that the court extend the deadline for postmarking absentee ballots to Election Day.

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, along with the ACLU of Maryland and People For the American Way, filed on behalf of thousands of Maryland voters who had not received their absentee ballots in time to meet the deadline of postmarking ballots by Monday, November 6. In fact, the state Board of Elections admitted that it had not sent at least one thousand absentee ballots out until Saturday, November 4.

Unfortunately, the trial court did not grant the requested relief because, in its view, it did not have any discretion to modify the deadline.
