During the recent presidential primaries, Election Protection responded to hundreds of problems across the country stemming from record voter turnout � missing voter registrations, false ID requirements, computer malfunctions, hours-long lines, and poorly-trained poll workers.

I'm writing to express my concerns about the problems encountered by some voters during the primary election.

As you know, voter turnout has been exceptionally high this year. While I am confident election officials and poll workers did their best to make sure everything went smoothly, it seems that system was not fully equipped to handle this historic challenge.

Election Protection - the nation's largest non-partisan voter protection coalition - responded to thousands of instances in which voters were either denied their basic right to vote, or forced to endure extremely frustrating circumstances simply to cast a ballot.

The good news is - we know how the system broke down, and we've still got time to make sure voters don't face the same obstacles during the general election in November.

Here are some of the problems voters faced across the country:

* Broken voting machines
  * Poorly-designed ballots
  * Under-trained poll workers
  * A shortage of provisional ballots
  * Missing registration information
  * Polls opening late
  * Hours-long lines
  * Incorrect information, such as false ID requirements in those states where none is required

I hope you share my concerns over the problems that occurred during the primary election. Of course, there will always be malfunctions and surprises, but the right training and planning can both prevent problems and help solve them when they do arise.

Between now and Election Day, I believe there is much we can to ensure that every legitimate vote gets cast and counted. I hope you will do everything in your power to ensure that our democracy works.
