Support the Caging Prohibition ActOn election day in Statesboro, GA, hundreds of legitimate votes could have been tossed out! In Statesboro, GA, some local residents were trying to swing the outcome of the election in their favor by challenging - without legitimate cause - the voting rights of college students. The Georgia Secretary of State's Office said it had never seen so many registration disputes. Baseless challenges of residency is a voter suppression tactic, and students are an easy target.New legislation can protect voters from this unfair practice-- show your support TODAY. As a constituent, registered voter, and support of the National Campaign for Fair Elections, I am deeply concerned that students at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA were being blocked from voting. 909 newly registered students were told they can’t vote, or their votes may not count, because they may not meet residency requirements. The Georgia Secretary of State's Office said it had never seen so many registration disputes. I am concerned that, by disputing the residency of nearly a thousand student voters, residents of Statesboro were trying to swing the outcome of the election in their favor. Hundreds of legitimate votes might be tossed out! That's why I am asking you to support the Caging Prohibition Act, introduced last week in the Senate, which would require any private party who challenges the right of another citizen to vote (or register to vote) to set forth in writing, under penalty of perjury, the specific grounds for the alleged ineligibility. The principle here is simple: we must stand up for the fundamental right of all voters to cast a meaningful ballot. "Voter caging" has gone on for decades. It's a simple tactic that targets inexperienced voters, minorities, and students. It's time to put a stop to it. I hope you will defend the voting rights of students in Statesboro and all over the country. Please support the Caging Prohibition Act. | Sign the petition today |
