Value Fair Elections? Act today!


Voter intimidation doesn't happen just every two years. In fact, it's going on right now.

Students in at Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro GA, have reported intimidation when they tried to vote:

  • 909 Georgia Southern University students face residency challenges - in part due to their age and the fact that they live in dorms.

  • Students intimidated by uniformed police officers stationed in and around the polling place.

  • One police officer told a student he'd face police action if he did not update his ID to reflect his residency in Bulloch County.

  • Another police officer harassed a female student by demanding she show where she lived on a map of the voting district and attempted to prevent her from voting even through she grew up in the area and attended Statesboro public schools.

Perhaps worst of all, one poll worker told a group of students their ballots would most likely be discarded!

The Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act is a key step towards ensuring every eligible American voter has the opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot in 2008 – and it would make the events in Statesboro illegal.

As a constituent and a supporter of National Campaign for Fair Elections, I urge you to support swift passage of the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act.

During the past few election cycles, our nation's democratic process has been threatened by countless examples – from more than 30 states – of nefarious tactics used to prevent low-income and minority voters from exercising their right to vote.

In Milwaukee, bogus flyers told people they couldn't vote if they didn’t pay their parking tickets. In Arizona, armed gunmen were reported intimidating, mocking and misinforming voters in heavily Latino precincts. In Pennsylvania, a poll worker pulled a Spanish-speaking voter’s ballot from the machine and told her it was his job to make sure she didn't vote.

These outrageous acts of intimidation and deception must be stopped before the 2008 elections – which is why it's critical that you help move the Deceptive Practices bill onto the President's desk as soon as possible.
