Voter Registration Information
The Lawyers’ Committee and its pro bono law firm partners have compiled comprehensive third-party voter registration guides for all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These guides will help volunteers, organizers, and leaders navigate the complex rules that govern voter registration in each state.

Absentee Voting
Absentee voting is allowed if voter is:
- A member of the Armed Forces or a spouse or dependent of a member of the Armed forces
- A U.S. citizen living overseas who will be at least 18 years of age before the next General Election and whose last residence prior to going overseas was in AL
- Going to be out of the country on Election Day
- Ill or has a disability preventing a trip to the polling place
- Is an appointed election officer or poll worker at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place
- Working a required shift of ten hours or more that coincides with polling hours
Rules and deadlines
- Absentee ballots can be found with the Local Absentee Manager and must be returned to the regional election office by mail or in person.
- Absentee voting applications must be recieved no later than the fifth day before an election.
- Voters with disabilities may apply for a ballot through a representative, who may also deliver the ballot to the election office by 5 pm the day before an election
- Ballot must be postmarked the day before an election or delivered to the Absentee Election Manager by 5 pm the day before an election.

Identification Requirements
At registration:
- Copy of valid and current photo ID, or
- Copy of current utility bill, or
- Bank statement, or
- Government check, or
- Paycheck, or
- Other government document that shows name and address of the voter.
At polls:
- Government-issued photo identifications authorized by law (current and valid, including any branch, department agency or entity of the federal government), or
- Employee identification with photo of employee produced by the employer, or
- Utility bill of voter with voter’s name and address, or
- Bank statement with voter’s name and address, or
- Government check with voter’s name and address, or
- Paycheck with voter’s name and address, or
- Valid identification card (authorized by law) issued by the State of Alabama (including any branch, department, agency, or entity of the State of Alabama, including colleges, universities, and technical or professional schools), or
- Valid identification card (authorized by law) issued by any of the other 49 states (including any branch, department, agency, or entity of that State), or
- Valid United States passport, or
- Valid Alabama hunting license, or
- Valid Alabama fishing license, or
- Valid Alabama pistol/revolver permit, or
- Valid pilot’s license issued by the FAA or other authorized agency of the federal government, or
- Valid United States military identification, or
- Birth certificate (certified copy, or)
- Valid Social Security card, or
- Naturalization document (certified copy), or
- Court record of adoption (certified copy), or
- Court record of name change (certified copy), or
- Valid Medicaid card, or
- Valid Medicare card, or
- Valid electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, or
- Government document that shows the name and address of the voter, or
