Voter Registration Information

The Lawyers’ Committee and its pro bono law firm partners have compiled comprehensive third-party voter registration guides for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  These guides will help volunteers, organizers, and leaders navigate the complex rules that govern voter registration in each state. 

Registration Deadlines

30 days before an election

Specific Deadlines:

  • 2008  Primary Election: Sunday, 7/27/08
  • 2008 REAA/CSRA Elections: Sunday, 9/7/08
  • 2008 General Election: Sunday, 10/5/08

Where to Obtain Registration Forms

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting is allowed if voter is:

  • Unable to be at his or her precinct on Election Day
  • A member of the Armed Forces or a spouse or dependent of a member of the Armed forces
  • A U.S. citizen living overseas who will be at least 18 years of age before the next General Election and whose last residence prior to going overseas was in AL

Rules and Deadlines

  • Absentee ballots can be found with the Regional Election Office and must be requested by mail ten days before an election.
  • Voters with disabilities may apply for a ballot through a representative, who may also deliver the ballot to the election office by 8 pm on Election Day.
  • Ballots must be returned to the Regional Election Office by mail or by fax.
  • Ballot must be postmarked ten days before the election or the fax must be received by 8 pm on Election Day.

Early Voting

Yes, for all registered voters 15 days before an election and on Election Day at appointed sites.

Identification Requirements

At registration:

  • Driver’s license,
  • State identification card,
  • Birth certificate,
  • Passport,
  • Hunting and fishing license.

At polls:

  • One form of identification required
  • Identification must show the name and current address of the voter
  • An election official may waive the identification requirement if the election official knows the identity of the voter
    • This is not applicapble to first-time voters who initially registered by mail or by facsimile or other electronic transmission

Acceptable Forms of Identification include:

  • An official voter registration card,
  • Driver’s license,
  • State identification card,
  • Current and valid photo identification,
  • Birth certificate,
  • Passport,
  • Hunting or fishing license,
  • An original or a copy of a current utility bill,
  • Bank statement,
  • Paycheck,
  • Government check,
  • Other government document

Information for felons

Voter is eligible to register once unconditionally discharged from custody. When no longer on probation, a copy of discharge papers will allow registration.
