Voter Registration Information

Absentee Voting
Absentee voting is allowed if the voter is:
- Going to be out of the county on Election Day
- Ill or has a disability preventing a trip to the polling place
- At least 65 years of age
- An appointed election officer or poll worker at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place
- Working a shift that coincides with all 12 hours of voting
- Is eligible under "fail-safe" procedures
- Will be confined during all 12 hours of voting due to illness or injury or will be caring for a confined person during this period
- Unable to make it to the polling place due to religious reasons
- In an address confidentiality program
- A member of the Armed Forces or a spouse or dependent of a member of the Armed forces
- A U.S. citizen living overseas who will be at least 18 years of age before the next General Election and whose last residence prior to going overseas was in IN
Rules and Deadlines
- Absentee ballots can be found with the County Election Board and must be requested at least eight days before an election.
- Ballots must be returned to the County Election Board. Ballots must be received by the county elections board before the polls close, or in a central count county by 12 noon, on Election Day in order to be counted.
- For overseas voters, mailed ballot must be postmarked by Election Day and must be received by the clerk’s office by the 10th day following the election.
- For overseas voters, ballot must be received by fax or email in time to be delivered to the appropriate precinct, generally 12:00 noon on Election Day.
Early Voting
Yes, for all registered voters beginning 29 days before the election and ending noon the day before the election.
Identification Requirements
At registration:
- Current and valid photo identification or
- A current utility bill,
- Bank statement,
- Government check,
- Paycheck
- Other government document that shows the name and address of the elector
At polls:
- Photo ID that meets the IN criteria for photo ID
- A photo ID must meet 4 criteria to be acceptable for voting purposes:
- ID must display the voter’s photo
- ID must display the voter’s name, and the name must conform with the voter registration record
- ID must display an expiration date and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (November 2, 2004)
- ID must be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government
- In most cases, an Indiana driver’s license, Indiana photo ID card, US Passport, or Military ID is sufficient.
- A student ID from an Indiana State school may only be used if it meets all of the 4 criteria specified above.
- A student ID from a private institution may not be used for voting purposes
