Voter Registration Information

The Lawyers’ Committee and its pro bono law firm partners have compiled comprehensive third-party voter registration guides for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.  These guides will help volunteers, organizers, and leaders navigate the complex rules that govern voter registration in each state. 

Registration Deadlines

28 days before an election

  • State Agencies that provide services (Department of Motor Vehicles)

Absentee Voting

Absentee voting is allowed if the voter is:

  • Registered
  • A member of the Armed Forces or a spouse or dependent of a member of the Armed Forces
  • A U.S. citizen living overseas who will be at least 18 years of age before the next general election and whose last residence prior to going overseas was in NM

Rules and Deadlines

  • Absentee ballots can be found with the county clerk and must be requested by 5 pm on the Friday before an election.  They must be returned to the county clerk or to the voter’s precinct.
  • Ballot must be received by 7 pm on Election Day.
  • Military and overseas voters may submit the ballot by fax

Early Voting

Yes, for all registered voters beginning the 28th day before the election and ending the Saturday before the election at the County Clerk’s Office.

Identification Requirements

At registration:

  • Current and valid photo identification or
  • A current utility bill,
  • Bank statement,
  • Government check,
  • Paycheck,
  • Other government document that shows the name and address of the elector

At polls, all voters must provide identification. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • An original or copy of a current and valid photo identification with or without an address, which is not required to match the voter’s certificate of registration or a voter identification card
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Government check
  • Paycheck
  • Student identification card
  • Other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo (Must show the name and address of the person, the address of which is not required to match the voter’s certificate of registration)
  • Verbal or written statement of the voter’s name, year of birth, and unique identifier
