Third Party Voter Registration in Louisiana
Although Louisiana did not impose restrictions on third party registration prior to 2004, in 2005, Louisiana amended its election law to include time limitations on application submissions and to impose civil and criminal penalties on third parties that do not abide by such requirements. Under the recently amended Louisiana Election Code, any persons who “knowingly, willfully, or intentionally” fail to submit completed applications obtained through registration drives within thirty days after receiving such applications will be “fined not more than one thousand dollars or be imprisoned for not more than one year, or both.” LA R.S. §§ 18:1461(A)(23);(B).
